David Buxton began his academic journey at Emory University where he majored in Tibetan Buddhism. He completed his medical school training at Virginia Commonwealth University graduating with Honors in Psychiatry. He went to Brown University for his Adult Psychiatry Residency and Harvard MGH/McLean for Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr.Buxton became the first psychiatrist to complete the Harvard MGH/Dana-Farber Palliative Care & Hospice Fellowship and one of the only child psychiatrists in the nation boarded in the field. He is an expert in the topic of psychiatry and palliative care.
He started the first Palliative Care Team in the Hospital Corporation of America system at CJW Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia and served as the Medical Director of the program. He has expertise in finding ways to leverage technology to improve communication in healthcare and at end of life thereby serving as a consult for a multitude of startups. As a volunteer clinical faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University, he supervises family medicine residents, psychiatry residents, nurse practitioner and social work students in communication and end-of-life.
